Wegovy® (Semaglutide) Weight Loss
FDA-approved, once-weekly GLP-1 treatment inside a complete physician-led program — labs, nutrition, and ongoing monitoring with Dr. Nancy Ferrel, MD.

Why a Physician-Led Program
Evaluation First
In-person consultation, health history, and baseline labs before any prescription — Wegovy is prescribed only when clinically appropriate.
Personalized Titration
A dosing plan built for your body and adjusted at scheduled follow-ups to balance results and side effects.
More Than Medication
Nutrition and lifestyle guidance so the weight you lose stays lost — medication is a tool, not the whole plan.
Whole-Health View
Hormones, thyroid, and metabolic health reviewed together, all in one Virginia Beach practice.
How Wegovy Works
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics a natural gut hormone that regulates appetite and slows stomach emptying, so you feel full sooner and stay full longer. In clinical trials, adults using semaglutide 2.4 mg alongside diet and exercise lost significantly more weight than with diet and exercise alone. Individual results vary.
- Once-weekly self-administered injection
- Gradual dose increases to improve tolerance
- Regular follow-ups to track progress safely

Who May Qualify
Under FDA labeling, Wegovy may be appropriate for adults with a BMI of 30+, or 27+ with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. Whether it is right for you can only be determined through a medical evaluation with Dr. Ferrel.
Cost, Pharmacy & Insurance
Appointments at Optimal Well MD are cash-pay. If Wegovy is prescribed, we send the prescription to a retail pharmacy, where you may be able to use your own prescription drug coverage — including TRICARE pharmacy benefits for eligible military families — subject to your plan’s rules and prior-authorization requirements. Coverage decisions are made solely by your plan, not by our office. Financing for visits is available through Cherry and Afterpay.
Important Safety Information
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort, especially as doses increase. Semaglutide carries a boxed warning based on thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodent studies; it should not be used by individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, and is not appropriate during pregnancy. Review the FDA prescribing information and discuss all risks with your provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast will I see results?
Most patients notice appetite changes within the first weeks; meaningful weight change builds over months as doses titrate. Results vary from person to person.
Wegovy vs. compounded semaglutide?
Wegovy is the FDA-approved brand. Your provider will discuss the options that are appropriate and lawful for your situation at your consultation.
Do you treat patients from the military community?
Yes — see our military weight loss page for how TRICARE pharmacy benefits may apply to your prescription.
