Mesotherapy involves a series of very superficial injections that deliver vitamins, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and other ingredients into the middle layer of the skin. It is used for skin quality rather than for volume or muscle relaxation, which makes it a different category from fillers and neuromodulators. At Optimal Well MD in Virginia Beach, Dr. Nancy Ferrel and team position it as one option among several for texture and hydration concerns.

What Mesotherapy Is
The technique originated in France and takes its name from the mesoderm, the middle layer of skin it targets. Rather than a single deep injection, mesotherapy uses many small, shallow injections across the treatment area.
Formulations vary widely and are not standardized. Common ingredients include hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamins such as B complex and C, amino acids, peptides, antioxidants, and minerals. Some practitioners use commercially prepared blends; others mix their own.
Two mechanisms are generally proposed. The ingredients themselves are delivered where they may act on the skin, and the micro-injuries from the needles trigger a healing response that can stimulate collagen, similar in principle to microneedling.

What It Is Used For
Facial mesotherapy is most commonly used for skin hydration, dullness, fine lines, uneven texture, and general skin quality. It is sometimes used on the neck, décolletage, and hands, where skin quality concerns are common but volume treatments are less appropriate.
It is also marketed for hair thinning, using formulations delivered into the scalp, and historically for localized fat reduction, though that application has largely been superseded by treatments with better evidence and clearer regulatory standing.
It is worth being clear about what it does not do. Mesotherapy does not lift, does not restore significant volume, and does not relax expression lines. Our mesotherapy treatments are usually discussed alongside other options rather than as a replacement for them.
What to Expect at a Session
Topical numbing cream is typically applied beforehand. The provider then performs a series of small injections across the treatment area, either by hand or with a mechanical device. A session usually takes twenty to forty-five minutes.
Most patients describe the sensation as multiple small pinpricks, uncomfortable but tolerable. Immediately afterward, small bumps or wheals are visible where product was deposited; these typically settle within hours to a day.
A course of treatments is standard rather than a single session, commonly three to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, with maintenance sessions thereafter.
Results and Evidence
Patients often report improved hydration, softness, and radiance. Improvements in fine lines and texture, where they occur, tend to be gradual and modest.
The evidence base is more limited than for treatments such as microneedling or hyaluronic acid fillers, in part because formulations differ so widely between practitioners that studies are hard to compare. Results vary considerably between individuals, and expectations should be calibrated to a subtle improvement in skin quality rather than a visible change in facial structure.
Side Effects and Risks
Common temporary effects include redness, small bumps, swelling, bruising, and tenderness for one to several days.
Less common risks include infection, allergic reaction to a formulation component, pigment changes especially in deeper skin tones, small nodules, and scarring. Because formulations are not standardized and some ingredients are used off-label, knowing exactly what is being injected is reasonable and you should feel comfortable asking.
Mesotherapy is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with active skin infection or inflammation in the area, in people with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulants, and with a history of keloid scarring or known allergy to components.
How It Compares to Other Options
Microneedling has a stronger evidence base for texture and collagen stimulation and may be a better first choice for those concerns. Injectable hyaluronic acid skin boosters target hydration with more standardized products. Medical-grade topical regimens and consistent sun protection address many of the same complaints at lower cost.
Mesotherapy can still be a reasonable choice, particularly for hydration and radiance, but comparing it against these alternatives is a fair part of the decision.
