Jeuveau, Xeomin & DAXXIFY: The Newer Wrinkle Relaxers

Botox dominated the wrinkle relaxer category for so long that its name became shorthand for the whole treatment. Several other botulinum toxin products are now widely available, and each has a characteristic worth understanding. The Shared Foundation

Jeuveau, Xeomin, and DAXXIFY are all botulinum toxin type A products, the same class as Botox and Dysport. All of them temporarily interrupt the nerve signal that causes a muscle to contract, softening the dynamic lines that repeated expression creates.

All are administered as small injections during a short office visit, all take several days to begin working, and all wear off gradually. The differences lie in formulation, onset, and duration rather than in mechanism.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau, sometimes called prabotulinumtoxinA, was approved specifically for cosmetic use in the glabellar lines between the brows. It is often described as the most directly comparable product to Botox in formulation and behavior.

Onset and duration are broadly similar to Botox for most patients, typically becoming noticeable within a few days and lasting around three to four months. Because it was developed purely for aesthetics, it is sometimes priced competitively, which can matter for patients treating a single area regularly.

Xeomin

Xeomin, or incobotulinumtoxinA, is distinguished by what it lacks. It is a purified formulation without the accessory proteins that accompany the active molecule in some other products, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a naked toxin.

The theoretical advantage is a lower likelihood of the immune system developing antibodies to those accessory proteins over time. Antibody-related resistance is uncommon overall, but Xeomin is sometimes considered for patients who have used neuromodulators for many years or who appear to be responding less than they once did.

Xeomin also does not require refrigeration before reconstitution, a practical rather than clinical difference. Onset and duration are broadly comparable to Botox.

DAXXIFY

DAXXIFY, or daxibotulinumtoxinA, is the newest of the group and is formulated with a peptide rather than human or animal-derived albumin. Its main talking point is duration.

Clinical data has suggested a longer effect for some patients, with results potentially lasting around six months compared with the three to four months typical of other products. Individual response varies considerably, and not everyone experiences the extended duration. Some patients also find that a longer-lasting product is less appealing if they are still refining their preferred look.

Because it lasts longer, an unsatisfactory result also persists longer, which is an argument for conservative dosing on a first treatment. Our neuromodulator treatments typically start conservatively for exactly this reason.

How to Choose

For most patients, provider skill and dosing matter more than which of these products is used. Placement determines whether the result looks natural, and no formulation compensates for poor technique.

Practical considerations do apply. Patients who dislike frequent appointments may prefer a longer-duration option. Patients new to neuromodulators may prefer a shorter-acting one while they establish what they like. Cost per treatment varies by practice and by how each product is priced, so comparing total treatment cost is more useful than comparing per-unit figures, since units are not equivalent across products.

Side Effects and Safety

All of these are prescription treatments requiring evaluation by a qualified provider. Common temporary side effects include bruising, redness or swelling at injection sites, headache, and tenderness.

Less common effects include temporary eyelid or brow drooping, asymmetry, or an altered expression, generally related to placement or product spread, resolving as the effect wears off. Rare but serious effects can occur if the toxin spreads beyond the intended area, including difficulty swallowing or breathing, which requires immediate medical attention.

These treatments are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular conditions or allergies to product components.
