A PDO thread lift is often described as a lunchtime facelift, which oversells it. What it can do is provide a modest lift and some collagen stimulation with far less downtime than surgery. What it cannot do is replicate a surgical facelift. At Optimal Well MD in Virginia Beach, Dr. Nancy Ferrel and team are direct with patients about which of those two categories their goals fall into.

What a PDO Thread Lift Is
PDO stands for polydioxanone, a synthetic absorbable material that has been used in surgical sutures for decades. In a thread lift, fine PDO threads are inserted under the skin using a needle or blunt cannula.
The threads work in two ways. Barbed or cogged threads grip the underlying tissue and provide mechanical lift when repositioned. Smooth threads, sometimes called mono threads, provide little lift but stimulate a controlled healing response that encourages collagen production over the following months.
The threads themselves dissolve over roughly four to six months. The collagen response they trigger is what accounts for the longer-tail effect.

What It Realistically Achieves
Thread lifts tend to suit patients with mild to moderate laxity who want subtle repositioning of the cheeks, jawline, or brow. The effect is generally described as a refresh rather than a transformation.
Results typically last somewhere between six and eighteen months, with wide individual variation depending on thread type, number used, technique, your tissue quality, and age.
Patients with significant skin laxity or substantial volume loss usually get disappointing results. In those cases, a surgical consultation, or a combination approach using PDO thread lift alongside volume restoration or skin-tightening treatments, is a more honest recommendation.
The Procedure Itself
Treatment usually takes thirty to sixty minutes depending on the number of threads and areas addressed. Local anesthetic is used at entry points, and often along the thread path.
Your provider maps the vectors of lift beforehand, since direction and placement determine the result. Threads are inserted, tension is adjusted, and the ends are trimmed. Most patients describe pressure and pulling sensations rather than sharp pain.
Recovery and Aftercare
Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and a tight or pulling sensation are common in the first days to weeks. Some puckering or dimpling at insertion points can occur and usually settles as tissue relaxes.
Aftercare instructions matter more here than with many injectables. Providers commonly advise sleeping on your back, avoiding vigorous exercise, facial massage, dental work, and wide mouth opening for a period of weeks, and avoiding sleeping on the treated side. Following these reduces the chance of thread migration or asymmetry.
Less common complications include visible or palpable threads, thread extrusion through the skin, asymmetry, prolonged dimpling, infection, and nerve irritation. Some of these require a return visit to address.
Who Is Not a Good Candidate
Thread lifts are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, in people with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulants, and in those with autoimmune conditions affecting healing or a history of keloid scarring.
Realistic expectations are also part of candidacy. Patients hoping for a surgical-level result without surgery tend to be dissatisfied regardless of how well the procedure goes.
Comparing It to the Alternatives
Compared with a surgical facelift, a thread lift offers much less downtime and lower cost, but a smaller and shorter-lived result. Compared with dermal fillers, threads reposition tissue rather than restore volume, and the two are often complementary rather than competing.
Because thread lifts are repeated to maintain the effect, it is worth calculating the cost over several years rather than per session when comparing options.
